FDA Ban and letter writing.
So it seems the US FDA has started a ban against electric cigarettes. I've been struggling with my own Nicotine addiction again recently, and decided to try and do something about the ban. Here's a letter I've drafted to my Congresswoman.

Quote:I'm writing today to talk about Electric Cigarettes and the US FDA. I'm not affiliated with any kind of advocacy group, and this is the first time I've written any of my elected officials.

I've been saving up to buy an Electric Cigarette system, but have recently found out that the FDA is banning their sale until more research has been done. I dearly want an Electric Cigarette, and I was hoping something could be done. I feel my history is very unique, but provides strong arguments for repealing the ban.

I was raised Mormon in Las Vegas, Nevada, and was obstinately anti-smoking until I came under investigation from the FBI in December 1998 for the $2 million robbery of the Bank of America Satellite Vault in Las Vegas. The stress got to me and I took up smoking and drinking. My involvement in the investigation lasted into the spring of 1999 and went as far as a grand jury hearing. Over the course of the investigation I was smoking between four and five packs a day. I managed to quit on my own in 2003 as my health began to waver.

In 2005 I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Degenerative Disk Disease. Earlier in 2009 I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I am also on Hormone Replacement Therapy, which compounds the dangers of smoking. Even with all these risks foremost in my mind, I still suffer Nicotine cravings.

I resumed smoking in 2007 as I couldn't shake the cravings. I've done a lot of various drugs at times in my life, gotten myself clean on all of them on my own, but Nicotine is the only one I still crave. I managed to quit again in September of 2008, but again find myself subject to cravings I cannot ignore.

The insidiousness of Nicotine addiction is the basis of the ban on Electric Cigarettes. The cigarettes themselves contain Nicotine suspended in alcohol. The alcohol is atomized, and the smoker gets a puff of vapor containing the Nicotine, but none of the other 400 plus chemicals found in cigarette smoke. Granted, I'm no scientist, but it seems to me that this shouldn't be any more dangerous than the various Nicotine containing gums, lozenges, and patches currently available over the counter at any drug store. Still the argument goes that Electric Cigarettes might introduce non-users to Nicotine use. Nicotine, absent the harmful chemicals contained in cigarette tobacco, is nothing more than a mild stimulant that is supposedly on par with Caffeine.

I support further research on Nicotine. I support further research on the Electric Cigarette delivery system. I do not agree with the reasons behind the ban on their sale. I cannot use a Nicotine patch. The Nicotine gums and lozenges on the market are unpleasant for more reasons than their flavor. I hope to try an Electric Cigarette soon.

The link to write your Congressperson (for any reason at all) is: https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml . You enter your State and Zipcode(+4) and it addresses your letter to whoever was elected from your district. Handy!

RE: FDA Ban and letter writing.
I realy doubt that anyone can do anything against government, They have baned ecigs because of the reason, that people will not buy reg cigaretes, and thus the money coming from reg cig taxes would vanish. Since the e cigs are not as health threatening as reg cig, the taxes would be considerebly lower. In conlusion government will try to do everything in theyr power to keep getting money. I realy doubt that the ban will be removed.
